Science-backed benefits of Float Therapy

Float therapy supports pain relief and recovery by addressing both physical load and nervous system regulation. Research suggests potential benefits may include:

  • Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Float therapy has been shown to support reductions in cortisol levels and activate the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system, which may help the body exit chronic stress states that often contribute to pain.
  • Relief from Chronic Pain and Muscle Tension: By significantly reducing gravitational load and external pressure, float therapy decreases stress on joints and muscles, allowing tight or inflamed tissues to relax. Studies suggest benefits for chronic pain conditions, including musculoskeletal discomfort.
  • Nervous System Regulation: Sensory reduction helps quiet excessive neural input, which can calm an overstimulated nervous system. This is especially helpful for stress-related pain, tension headaches, and conditions associated with nervous system dysregulation.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Research indicates float therapy may support improved sleep onset and quality by reducing nervous system arousal and muscle tension. These are both common contributors to poor sleep and delayed recovery.
  • Reduced Inflammation: Deep relaxation and stress reduction are associated with improved inflammatory regulation in the body. Float therapy supports this process by decreasing sympathetic nervous system activity.
Improved Mental Clarity and Focus: Participants often report improved cognitive clarity following float sessions, likely due to reduced mental fatigue, stress load, and sensory input.

Understanding Float Therapy: What to Expect

Float therapy, also known as sensory reduction therapy, involves resting in a float pod filled with Epsom salt–infused water that supports the body in a weightless environment. By reducing gravitational pressure and limiting external sensory input, float therapy allows the muscles and nervous system to relax more fully, supporting pain relief, stress reduction, and recovery. At Kairos, our float pods are designed to provide a quiet, controlled environment that supports comfort and nervous system regulation. Whether you’re new to floating or returning as part of a recovery plan, understanding what to expect can help you feel more prepared and get the most from your session. Below, you’ll find guidance on the float process and how to prepare.

Many first-time clients notice a sense of relief simply from removing pressure from the body even before the session ends.

The Float Therapy Experience

Your float therapy journey at Kairos begins with a brief orientation where our staff will explain the session and answer any questions you might have. You’ll then be guided to a private room equipped with a personal shower and a premium float pod. Here’s a step-by-step overview of what to expect during your float therapy session:

  1. Entering Your Private Float Room: Once inside your private float room, the environment can be tailored to your comfort with adjustable temperature controls. Our staff will assist you with programming your float to include optional music and lighting preferences.
  2. Pre-Float Shower: Start with a shower using the provided toiletries to remove any oils and prepare your body for floating. This ensures the highest level of hygiene and comfort.
  3. Entering the Float Pod: Once inside the float pod, adjust the float pod’s lid to your preferred position.
  4. The Float Session: Lie back in the pod and let the Epsom salt solution support your body. As you float, you’ll experience a sensation of weightlessness and sensory isolation. This time is perfect for meditation, deep relaxation, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet. Each floating session ranges from 30-90 minutes long.
  5. Post-Float Shower: After your session, take another shower to rinse off the Epsom salt. You will then return to the prep room to get changed and freshened up before you head out to conquer the rest of your day.

How to Prepare for Your Float Session

Preparing for your float session ensures you get the most out of your experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare effectively:

  • Avoid Stimulants: Refrain from consuming caffeine or other stimulants at least a few hours before your float, as they can interfere with your ability to relax.
  • Eat Lightly: Have a light meal 1-2 hours before your session. Floating on an empty or overly full stomach can be uncomfortable.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before your session to stay hydrated but avoid drinking large amounts right before floating.
  • Personal Hygiene: Shower thoroughly before your float to remove oils and perfumes, ensuring the Epsom salt solution remains clean and effective.
  • Arrive Early: Arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment to complete any necessary paperwork and get settled in without rushing.
  • Remove Jewelry: Take off any jewelry.
  • Avoid Shaving/Waxing: Avoid shaving or waxing on the day of your float, as freshly shaved skin may be sensitive to the salt.

The Science Behind Float Therapy

Float therapy is not just about relaxation.

It creates a controlled environment that helps reduce physical load, calm the nervous system, and support the body’s ability to recover more effectively.

Instead of focusing on surface level effects, it works by changing the conditions your body is operating in.

004

Stress Reduction and Relaxation

Float therapy helps the body shift out of a constant state of tension and into a more relaxed, regulated state. By reducing external stimulation and physical demand, the body is able to:
  • lower stress response patterns
  • reduce muscle guarding
  • allow deeper relaxation without effort
For many people, this is the first time their system has had a chance to fully downshift.

Mental Health and Well-Being

When the body is under constant stress, it can impact focus, mood, and overall well-being.

Float therapy supports a more balanced state by:

  • reducing sensory overload
  • calming mental activity
  • creating space for mental reset

This often leads to improved clarity, better recovery, and a greater sense of overall stability.
